In an intimate setting at Melbourne’s Gasworks Theatre, just a stone’s throw from the coastline of Albert Park, Scimm Dance Company dazzles audiences with their 2024 rendition of ‘Paracosm,’ a captivating work as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival.

This production features a remarkable ensemble of 10 professional dancers, each showcasing acrobatic flair and artistry. ‘Paracosm’ delves into the intricacies of the imaginary worlds within our minds, using visual imagery as a catalyst to convey the brain’s inner workings. As the performance unfolds, the audience is transported into a realm of endless possibilities and escapism.

Paracosm’ (meaning: a prolonged fantasy world invented by children) is a 60-minute work that masterfully explores the corners of creative licence, bringing to life the intricate imaginary worlds we crafted as children. These realms, complete with their own geography, history, and language, offer a captivating escape from reality, vividly expressed through a harmonious blend of dance, sound, lighting, and visual art.

Standout moments in the performance include Eden Kew’s awe-inspiring acrobatics, where they seem to defy gravity with breathtaking moves. This is beautifully juxtaposed by senior artist Bailey Glen’s deep expression and exquisite flexibility during a solo moment, showcasing the profound emotional range of the ensemble.

The rising stars of the cast exude artistic maturity in their movements—a testament to their extensive performance training. Evoking a sense of bodily detachment, the dancers fluidly transition into a new world of imagination where they become increasingly agile and dynamic. This transformation breathes new life into their personas, enriching the narrative with compelling lighting design and visual projection.

Aesthetically, the dancers begin in black attire, symbolising a bleakness of their reality. However, as they embark on their journey of escapism, they slowly transition into striking all-white costumes, reflecting a newfound exploration.

Artistic directors Scott Pokorny and Tim Barnes have masterfully crafted a show that celebrates the power of imagination. They remark, “We have aimed to create a show that showcases this phenomenon, offering an artistic feast fit for the senses.”

The production benefits from the talents of a skilled creative team, including dynamic lighting designer Nick Glen and celebrated visual artist Jonty Knight. The choreography, a collaboration between Pokorny, Barnes, and the dancers of Scimm Dance Company, is both innovative and evocative.

As we celebrate this remarkable production, Pokorny and Barnes deserve commendation for their achievements, paving the way for professional dancers to engage with contemporary dance. ‘Paracosm’ is not just a performance; it is an invitation to explore the boundless realms of imagination, reminding us of the power of creativity and the beauty of artistic expression.
